New Vendor Shmonuts Donuts Debuts at Van Vorst Park Farmer's Market
A new doughnut vendor, Shmonuts Donuts, made their debut at the Van Vorst Farmer's Market last weekend.
Owned and operated by two local moms with a love of baking and a passion for classic doughnuts, Shmonuts Donuts focuses on traditional style yeast donuts with classic toppings and glazes. On Saturday, they were carrying four styles: glazed, cinnamon sugar, vanilla, and chocolate - including some with sprinkles!
While doughnuts have consistently been one of the areas where Jersey City is lacking, we've started to see more options thanks to coffee shops like The Grind Shop and Hidden Grounds who bring in doughnuts from well-known doughnut shops in the city, but none of them carry the same classic charm and delicious simplicity of what Shmonuts Donuts is offering.
After stopping by on Saturday to give them a try, I'm happy to say I was pleasantly surprised. While Shmonuts is a new vendor, they seemed well-prepared and had consistent quality. The doughnut part itself was a little denser than I would have expected, but their vanilla and chocolate glazes were very good with a smooth, glossy look, a thick but not gloopy texture, and a rich, pure flavor. If you've ever had a frosted doughnut that tastes like "white", you'll know how refreshing it is to really get vanilla. The cinnamon sugar doughnut was also a major hit, leaning slightly more towards cinnamon vs sugar, providing more depth of flavor.
The doughnuts are $2.50 each with 3 for $7 and more discounts the more you buy. Shmonuts Donuts is planning on being at the Van Vorst Farmer's Market every Saturday from 8:30am-3:00pm. Stop by to try them out!
