Get to Know JC Eater: Erin

Welcome to "Get to Know JC Eater" where, every week, I post a profile of a local resident sharing where and what they love to eat in Jersey City. If you'd like to be featured, please leave a comment below or email mdirectly.

This week's JC Eater is a long-time Jersey City resident and fellow ice cream lover who's been enjoying and photographing the hidden pockets of nature around Jersey City for years.

What is your name?
Erin DeLaney

Where in Jersey City do you live?
I’ve lived in Jersey City Heights for 17 years.

Do you have a favorite non-food spot/area in Jersey City?
I love the Jersey City Reservoir, by Pershing Field Park! It is a decommissioned manmade reservoir that was the water source for Jersey City, Hoboken, and Ellis Island which has reverted back to nature. It is open for visits on summer weekends and is a great place to get away for those of us who don’t have backyards. I have been taking photographs there for over 10 years and am amazed at the wildlife and beauty hidden away in such an urban neighborhood.

Do you follow a specific dietary lifestyle?
I am mainly a casual eater and, unfortunately, really spicy food doesn’t agree with me. I don’t eat fish, but that’s by choice not necessity.

What are your favorite places to eat in your neighborhood? What are your favorite places to eat in Jersey City overall?
My go to spot in the Heights is Renatos/Pizza Masters. Great pizza and really good Italian food, with a nice dinning room in the back.

I can often be found at ChocOPain on Summit because their pastry and baguettes take me back to time spent in Paris (the chocolate chip sourdough boules are amazeballs!). There are a lot of places that have opened in the last few years up in the Heights like ModCup (coffee), Ozu Foods (Japanese), A Little Gelato, Dulce De Leche Bakery, but I also love the old school spots like Podewitz (deli), Dahlia’s Ice Cream, and Andrea Salumeria.

My favorite eateries outside of my neighborhood include Milk Sugar Love, Cocoa Bakery, LB Burger Bar, and Harry Street Coffee. There are a lot of restaurants that I want to try in Jersey City because I follow them on Instagram and they post beautiful food porn!

Is there a particular dish in Jersey City that's your favorite or that you find yourself recommending over and over?
I love to see what LB Burger Bar posts as their weekly burger battles and have gone downtown specifically to try a challenger.

I love ALL the pastries at ChocOPain! I have become addicted to the Doctor’s Orders fresh juice (carrot, apple, pineapple, lemon, ginger) at Dulce De Leche on Central. And any of the fruit ice cream flavors from Milk Sugar Love are worth a walk down to Hamilton Park to get.

What kind of restaurant would you love to see in Jersey City that isn't here already?
I can’t think of anything. But I also know that there are sooooo many local places that I haven’t gone to yet that I have a lot of food adventures ahead of me.

Any other info?
I am a photographer (website ErinADeLaneyPhoto.com) and I do a lot of “tourist in my own town” type posts on instagram (ErinADeLaneyPhoto), along with food porn! I have been working on an Adult Coloring Book project based on my photos of Jersey City. It will be available soon at New Heights Art Supply on Central Ave, online, and hopefully in other local stores. My work is also available online at zazzle.com/ErinADeLaneyPhoto and zazzle.com/erinphotodesign.
