Interview with the Candidate: Nicholas J. Grillo

Jersey City elections are right around the corner and I wanted to offer the opportunity to get to know the candidates a little better and let people learn more about who's running to represent them.

These interviews are available to any candidate running in Jersey City and are not indicative of an endorsement or political support. If you're interested in learning more about any of the candidate's policies, please click on the links to read more.

Read on to learn more about Nicholas Grillo, running for Downtown Ward E Council, ballot position 7C.

What are some of the changes you've seen in Jersey City in the time that you've lived here? What changes would you like to see in the next four years?
As the only candidate that is from Jersey City the answer is A LOT.  In the past 37 years there is little about Jersey City that hasn’t changed. More development, more parks, more people.  Jersey City wasn’t always a place people wanted to be and now it is arguably one of the best mid-sized cities in the country.  A lot has been accomplished.  That being said, with change and growth comes new challenges and over the next four years, my hope is to be elected as Councilman to help try to solve them.  For instance, I think we need to work alongside developers to get better give backs for our community. We need more schools especially in Downtown where overcrowding is becoming more of an issue. We also need to work alongside other local and statewide elected officials to demand the Port Authority actually service the needs of Jersey City, Harrison, and Newark. We need to work on pedestrian and street safety and implement a Vision Zero plan that will eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries.  It is also important to focus on basic quality of life issues and real change that we can effectuate on the local level.  We'll also need to work through the reval.

The Mozz Boss

A few weeks ago, when Uber was running their NJ free ride promotion, I decided to take advantage of the opportunity to visit an area of Jersey City I don't otherwise often go to, Greenville, and check out The Mozz Boss. That's right - I'm so dedicated, I used my free rides to get sandwiches to benefit all of you (actually, the logisitics just ended up working out well, but still).

I first saw The Mozz Boss at La Festa Italiana last summer where they had a booth, but I never ended up trying anything although I did see people walking away with delicious looking bowls of food and stuffed-to-the-brim sandwiches. A couple of months later, when I heard they'd opened up a storefront in Jersey City, I put it on my to-try list but took a while to get to it - my mistake.

Walking in, I was amazed at how much space there is. There are plenty of seats - a rare commodity for most downtown delis. It seemed like most of the cold cuts were Boar's Head brand (despite the stickers) and there were some salads and antipastis to choose from as well. I went in on a Sunday when they close early and felt like they had less available than they might otherwise.

Why You Should go to La Festa Italiana: An Essay in Photographs

As I mentioned, La Festa Italiana is a really fun annual festival and street fair held in Jersey City. It ends tomorrow night, so you've got two more nights to go (or go again) and here's why you should:

 Live Entertainment

Delenio's Menu & the meatballs which were really good. Flavorful, juicy, and in a slightly tart tomato sauce.

Reminder: La Festa Italiana

La Festa Italiana starts today on 6th Street between Monmouth and Brunswick! This traditional Old World Italian Festival is held every year and hugely popular. It really captures a lot of the old and new Italian culture and the traditions that are especially prevalent in Jersey City. It's family-friendly with activities, booths, and of course food!
