Weekend Round-Up: West Side Chili Cook-Off, Ghost of Uncle Joe's, and More!

Happy Weekend, Jersey City! The weekend is full of fall events like hot chocolate and s'mores at Lutze's End of Season Party, a Chili Cook-Off, and The Ghost of Uncle Joe's along with much, much more. Here's what's going on:

Shucktoberfest, Zeppelin Hall
Head to Zeppelin Hall this weekend for their three day long Shucktoberfest featuring oysters on the half shell for $1.50 each. They'll have live 90s bands on Friday, a DJ on Saturday, and football all day Sunday.

• Congratulations to PS Wine Bar on being named one of the 15 Most Important Natural Wine Bars in America! PS Wine Bar has become one of my personal favorite spots with a creative and innovative wine list that encourages experimentation. 
• New coffee shop Thinking Cup Cafe opened quietly last week at 201 Warren Street in the former Two Aprons space. They describe themselves a fast casual restaurant specializing in Mediterranean-American inspired cuisine, carrying soups, sandwiches, pastries and more. 

Weekend Events: JCWSCA Chili Cook Off, Lafayette Oktoberfest, Mathews Brunch & More

Saturday, 10/7

• Join Point Capital Development, Lucky 7's, and RDG Hospitality for the Lafayette Neighborhood Oktoberfest. The party begins at 12pm and runs through 8pm at the Baker Building, 234 Suydam Ave - there will be music, drinks, food from Mordi's Schnitzel, and more.

• The JC West Side Chili Cook-Off has been announced! It will be held on Sunday, 10/8 beginning at 12pm. If you're interested in competing, read the rules here. 
• Congratulations to Bambino Chef on being featured on News 12 New Jersey to share some healthy, simple, fun lunch box ideas. 
• Join Chris Leo of PS Wine Bar and Lourdes of the Vine for an Old World vs New World Wine Class on Tuesday 9/26 at 7pm. Tickets are $45/person.

4th Streets Arts is bringing back their epic culinary battle and homebrew tasting fundraiser! 

Community News: Hurricane Harvey Help, Porta expanding, Jersey City Fish Stand & More

Over the past weekend, Hurricane Harvey caused devastating flooding throughout parts of Texas, displacing thousands, destroying homes, and injuring many others. If you'd like to help, here are some good options:

• Text HARVEY to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross who are on the scene helping provide temporary housing, relocation assistance, food, clothes, and medical supplies. 
• Donate to these food banks in hard hit areas: Corpus Christi www.foodbankcc.com; Houston www.houstonfoodbank.org/donate/; Galveston www.galvestoncountyfoodbank.org/
• Huffington Post and Charity Navigator both have ongoing lists of verified organizations seeking donations of food, blood, money, and supplies like diapers and formula for families with small children.

• The date for the JC West Side Chili Cook-Off has been formally announced! It will take place on Sunday, 10/8.
• In sad news, Brazicki's Tavern in Jersey City Heights is closing after 72 years in business.

• Congratulations to the winners of the Jersey City West Side Chili Cook Off, Aaron van Dorn and the Wynn family.
• Orale MK has announced a line-up of events to celebrate Halloween.
• The Baonanas Kickstarter has officially launched. They're trying to expand their business and move into a larger kitchen space with the possibility of a storefront. 
• Satis Bistro, Lucky 7, and Light Rail Cafe have teamed up with The Baker Building to throw an Oktoberfest party on Oct. 15th from 12-8pm.

• The Iron Monkey is hosting an Altos Agave mixology class on Tuesday, 8/16 beginning at 7pm for $25/person.
• Barcade will be closed on Monday, 8/15 for their annual staff party. 
• Congratulations to The Angry Crab, celebrating one year in business. 
• Chilltown Kitchen has announced they'll be holding a Dominican-themed supper club in September.

• Greene Hook opened up this weekend! They'll be open beginning at 5pm Tuesday through Saturday for now.

• Choc-O-Pain has some new bakery items ready for Mothers Day, including an indulgent-looking chocolate ganache tart with strawberries, so start placing your orders now.
• Trolley Car Bar and Grill has started offering brunch on the weekends beginning at 12pm.
• Barcade is now offering a free app that tracks tap lists, events, and scores. However, for right now, it looks like it's only available for Apple through iTunes.
