Project Eats 2017 Meet the Vendor: Waffle It & Co.

The Jersey City Project's Project Eats 2017 is back on 6/24 and 6/25 with new vendors and returning favorites, all ready to serve up some delicious, indulgent eats. To help get you ready, I'm excited to be collaborating with The Jersey City Project to spotlight some of the vendors from this year's Project Eats, learning more about their business, their food, and what they love about Jersey City.

Project Market

The Jersey City Project is back again with their third annual Project: Market this Saturday and Sunday from 11am-6pm behind City Hall.

While this particular market focuses on vintage and hand-crafted goods for the holidays, there's still plenty of good eats to enjoy and it's the perfect spot to pick up a few food-related gifts for the obsessed eater in your life - or just some good host/hostess gifts.

Milk Sugar Love and Taproot Organics Team Up

The first time I met Daniel Grunes, co-owner of Taproot Organics and former chef, at the launch party of the first Eighty Mag, he asked me what I thought was the most interesting restaurant in Jersey City . Not necessarily the best or the trendiest, but the most interesting - and though I didn't say it and in fact, struggled to answer because at the time Jersey City was going through a bit of a dining slump, my first instinct was to say Milk Sugar Love (despite it not being an actual restaurant). It was one of the best questions I've ever gotten about food and I've never stopped thinking about it since. Whenever I do, Milk Sugar Love is always included in my mental list so you can imagine my complete and total delight when I found out they were collaborating on a special new flavor.

Event Recap: 6th Borough Market is Back!

Besides Project: Earth, this weekend was also the official reopening of the 6th Borough Market! Held once a month, the 6th Borough Market is a family-friendly outdoor market that focuses on vintage and handmade goods of all kinds with an emphasis on fun and community.

It's amazing to walk around the market and just look at the physical evidence of people's creativity and hard work. There was lots of jewelry, some really interesting art, baby goods, and several booths where I could easily see myself picking up a gift or three in the future.

And of course, there was some excellent food. Amongst the options, there was Choc-O-Pain with bread and sweets, Iced Tea Fusion - a newcomer to the market, Milk Sugar Love and Jersey City Veggie Burgers were both there for their second day of markets, as was Incrediballs, and several other new and familiar faces.

This Weekend is ALL About Jersey City

Trying to plan your weekend? I hope you're not planning on being anywhere other than Jersey City because there are two major events celebrating creativity, unique finds, and shopping local happening this weekend and you do not want to miss them.

Besides the extraordinary array of product and design vendors being showcased, both events also have amazing food line-ups to keep you satiated as you shop. And let's be honest, for most of us me, that's really the major draw here. Knowing there's delicious food to be had and really cool things to look at? There's no turning back now.

First up, on Saturday 4/26, The Jersey City Project will be bringing Project: EARTH to City Hall from 11am - 6pm and this one promises to be even bigger and better than December's Project: Market (which was already pretty great).

Community News

  • Congratulations are in order for Jersey City Veggie Burgers who earned enough votes to advance to the finals round in the Start Something NJ challenge - so congratulations and best of luck!
  • Great news! Beginning tomorrow, the Incrediballs Truck will be offering Cocoa Bakery's cake truffles on the truck! I love this news for several reasons: a) it's great to see Jersey City businesses working together b) it's also great to see food trucks and brick and mortar stores working together c) I like foods in roundish form
  • Speaking of Cocoa Bakery, they recently announced a new menu item: chocolate bread and it looks amazing: https://twitter.com/CocoaBakeryJC/status/398449225031499776/photo/1

Event Recap: The All About Downtown Street Fair

This year's All About Downtown Street Fair had gorgeous weather, vendors from all around Jersey City, and tons of people in attendance. It was a great day with plenty to do, see, eat, drink, and enjoy!

The food trucks were a big hit and every time I passed by, I saw people lining up and looking at menus. I tried a carnitas taco from the El Paso truck which was there in stand form. It was delicious - great amount of pork, perfectly cooked tortilla, plenty of lime, cilantro and onion.

There was a mix of NYC and NJ and specifically Jersey City food vendors all throughout the fair which I was very happy to see. While it was fun to have the NY trucks around, I'm really glad the organizers brought in so many local options and businesses as well - after all, the fair is about Downtown so it deserves to be well represented.

6th Borough Market

6th Borough Market - Jersey City, New Jersey

Don't forget, this Sunday is the premiere of the 6th Borough Market!

The 6th Borough Market is a family-friendly outdoors market that focuses on artisan and vintage crafts and goods. The organizers have been running a countdown on Facebook with focuses on some of the vendors that will be present and it looks like there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

Foodwise, there will be a number of vendors from all around Jersey City, including Jersey City Veggie Burgers, Roman Nose, Milk Sugar Love, ModCup, Choc-O-Pain, and more!  Come look around, shop, eat and help make this event a success. It's a great way to bring some focus to the creative side of Jersey City, to local artisans, and the downtown area.

The market will be held on Sunday from 11am-4pm at 1 McWilliams Place.

Event Recap: July 1st, 2013 - The Inauguration and Its Food

Yesterday, on July 1st, the Inauguration of Steven Fulop as Mayor of Jersey City took place at City Hall and to mark the occasion, there was a block party. While the idea did create some controversy, especially in regards to parking rules, I have to say I've never seen an event in Jersey City so well-attended and it was a very pleasant surprise.  I personally was quite thrilled because I knew there would be a lot of different food all in one place. Here's my version of the Inauguration:

Scenes from Downtown Jersey City Farmers’ Market

Monday night, I took some time to wander around the Farmers' Market outside the Grove Street Path.  I love the Farmers’ Market and make it a point to do some shopping there whenever I can. It’s grown a huge amount over the past few years and I love seeing the variety of stands and vendors that show up.  Here are some samples of what can be found:

Choc-O-Pain was there, advertising their store-front, and selling some very tempting-looking pastries.
