Interview with the Candidate: Rolando Lavarro

Jersey City elections are right around the corner and I wanted to offer the opportunity to get to know the candidates a little better and let people learn more about who's running to represent them.

These interviews are available to any candidate running in Jersey City and are not indicative of an endorsement or political support. If you're interested in learning more about any of the candidate's policies, please click on the links to read more.

Read on to learn more about Rolando Lavarro, running for Council At-Large, 1B with Team Fulop.

What are some of the changes you've seen in Jersey City in the time that you've lived here? What changes would you like to see in the next four years?
Jersey City has changed tremendously since I was a kid.  It seems almost unbelievable now, but Downtown used to be a pretty rough area. Greenville, where I grew up, was a safe and thriving middle class neighborhood. Journal Square was once a bustling transportation hub surrounded by grand movie houses and high-end shopping.

National Taco Day

Today is National Taco Day and while I'm not a big believer in food holidays (although love holidays with food), National Taco Day is something I can get behind.

If you're not familiar with all the choices Jersey City has to help you celebrate (there are a lot), here's a guide to get you started.

Monteleone's Bakery - A Reminder of Jersey City's Past

Monteleone's Bakery, near Journal Square, is the embodiment of Jersey City past. Housed on the ground floor of a small brick building with a wall of shelves and a couple of display counters, you get the impression upon walking in that not much has changed since they first opened several decades ago and truthfully, probably not much has.

Primarily an Italian bakery with countless varieties of cookies, there's a strong sense of the traditional and classic in all the baked goods. Nothing is baked to be a visually-inspiring creation, but just a sweet dessert that becomes a taste of the nostalgically familiar, evident even in the boxes tied up with red and white string.

Morsella & Cupo: Great Sandwiches in Journal Square

It's no secret that Jersey City has some awesome delis around. Proof is here and here and now, here.

UPDATE: Less than a month after this posting, I received a comment (see below) that Morsello and Cupo was being reported as closed. I've tried contacting the previous owners several times but haven't been successful in reaching them. I can confirm it is closed but I'm hoping they'll reopen in time somewhere else . If anyone has any further information, please let me know.

Morsella & Cupo near Journal Square is relatively small, more of a take-out counter than anything else, but they have more than enough delicious food to make sure you leave happy. The focus is on sandwiches but they do offer hot entrees with a schedule of specials every day, including this chicken bruschetta ($8) every Tuesday and Thursday.
