Get to Know Eater: Ariel

Welcome to "Get to Know JC Eater" where every week I post a profile of a local resident sharing where and what they love to eat in Jersey City.  This site is meant to be useful to the community so what better way to do that than involve the community itself? If you'd like to be featured, please leave a comment below or email me directly.

This week's JC Eater (and her dog) are newcomers to Jersey City who are looking forward to finding all the best vegan eats.

Weekend Events

Although one of the major events of this weekend is JC Project:Eats, there's lots more happening in Jersey City!

On Saturday, Zeppelin Hall is holding a Masskrugstemmen contest beginnging at 11pm. What is a Masskrugstemmen contest, you ask? Well, according to Zeppelin Hall, Masskrugstemmen literally means “beer-stein holding” and it has been a fixture in German Beer Gardens for generations. The rules are simple - Contestants must hold a 1-liter stein filled to the top with beer at arm’s length for as long as possible.

The winner of the competition wins a free night in New York City and will compete in the National Championship at the Steuben Day Fest in Central Park on Saturday, September 20th where the first prize is an all expense paid trip to Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany.

New on Newark Food Tour

A couple of months ago, I joined what was Garden State Food Tours for a tour (full disclosure: it was a trial run and I paid a discounted price).Since then, Garden State Food Tours has evolved into Jersey Girls Food Tours and while the name has changed, the tours are staying!

The one I went on is called New on Newark and it focuses on several of the new restaurants and cafes that have opened up along Newark Avenue in downtown Jersey City. While the locations can be subject to change depending on availability, you can count on hitting several major spots like Union Republic, Left Bank Burger Bar, Tea NJ & more.

Tea NJ Comes To Jersey City!

On Saturday, Tea NJ held their soft opening, and while they started a little late, they quickly had a full house. Located at 262 Newark Avenue by Monmouth in the Village, next to Tachair Bookshoppe, the space is intimate but with room for about 10 tables and the counter. It's got a cozy, relaxed feel with an eclectic collection of art, figurines, and other decor placed all around the store including an art wall where Jersey City artists will be welcome to post their work for free.

Walking in, we were told to pick anywhere we wanted to sit down and menus were brought over to us while drinks to go were being ordered at the counter. The tea list is extensive, listing green, black, oolong, white, and many more as well as specialty beverages including tea ciders, bubble tea, different tea lattes and a number of coffee drinks with coffee from Red House Roasters in Union City. Each of the teas listed comes with a caffeine rating and a thorough description to help guide your decision and they offer a variety of milks and sweeteners so this is about as personalized as it gets.
