Second Street: Not Just for Sandwiches

Bread + tomato sauce + mozzarella = happiness

This is an equation that has been proven over and over again. Second Street Bakery, already well-established as a wonderful Italian deli, is one more example proving this theory true.

The pizzas available at Second Street aren't what we typically think of when conjuring up the image of a pizza; they're a bit more rustic, more free-form and only come in the most classic variety: bread + tomato sauce + mozzarella. But this is all you need to enjoy a delicious treat.

The pizza crust is slightly crispy on the bottom with a bit of a chew but not the kind that brings to mind old leather.  The tomato sauce is very simple, not herby, but a pure, slightly sweet, slightly salty tomato sauce whose advantage is its simplicity because it highlights the the bread and cheese. The mozzarella, from their own homemade mozzarella, melts beautifully, getting some nice bubbly brown spots, but keeps a bit of  satisfying elasticity so you get cheese in almost every bite. While there's plenty of it on there, the mozzarella doesn't overwhem the pizza by making it a cheesebomb and the creaminess makes it feel substantially more rich than it is.

While not huge, the pizzas are certainly enough for one person or as a snack to split amongst a couple of friends before diving into some other delicious offerings from Second Street. They're also amazing cheap, costing only a couple of dollars which might be an even better deal than the sandwiches. They aren't a guaranteed menu item, but are usually available - just try to go early! And if you miss it...well, there are plenty more options available.
