Yesterday, I received an email announcing a statewide peach
pie contest! There will be competitions in south Jersey, central Jersey, and north
Jersey with one of the competitions being held at our very own Riverview-FiskPark in Jersey City Heights at the weekly Riverview Farmers Market on Sunday,
July 21st. Winners will go on to present
their pies on Good Day in New York or
Pennsylvania and two grand prize winners will be chosen.
I am so excited about this – I love peaches, it’s a fun
competition for the whole state to participate in, and we in Jersey City get to
feature the event and enjoy it! In
addition to the competition and normal farmers market, there will be other fun
peach-themed activities and events. This is being sponsored by the New JerseyPeach Promotion Council and the Market is organized by Farms in the Heights. This is such a great community
activity and so worth our support.
The competition will only allow peach pies and cobbler
(which I’m actually curious about; there are a lot of definitions of cobbler
and I’m going to see if I can get clarification), nothing else, and they must
be made with Jersey peaches. If you
decide to participate and register for the event, please let me know! I’d love
to feature you and/or your pie here.
Here is the content of the email I received with more
details, including registration information:
Riverview Farmers
Market Hosts “Perfect Peach Pie Contest”
Jersey City, NJ -- On Sunday, July 21st, 2013, the Riverview
Farmers Market will
take part in the first statewide Perfect Peach Pie Contest,
sponsored by the New
Jersey Peach Promotion Council.
Only 6 farmers markets in New Jersey will be contest venues:
2 in south Jersey, 2 in
central Jersey, and 2 in north Jersey. One winner will be
selected at each of the 6
farmers markets. After a final judging, two grand-prize
winners (one from
south/central Jersey, one from north/west Jersey) will be
awarded a choice of
overnight stay with dinner for two in either Atlantic City
or Cape May.
All participants must be amateur bakers and must use New
Jersey peaches.
Participants can make either peach pie or peach cobbler; no
other dishes will be
accepted.
At the Riverview Farmers Market on July 21st, the Perfect
Peach Pie Contest judging
and tasting will be held at noon. The contest judges will
include Michael Yun, City
Councilman for Jersey City’s Ward D, and Mory Thomas, Jersey
City resident and
Director of Culinary Development for the Food Network.
Additional programming at the Market will include
peach-themed events and
activities for adults and children, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
There will also be a free musical performance by local band
The Benson Ridge
Project at 1:00. The Market will be open, as usual, from 9
a.m. to 2 p.m. with all its
local vendors.
Once all 6 venues have completed their local contests, the 6
winning bakers will take
their pies to Fox Television Good Day in New York and
Philadelphia for final
judging by morning show hosts, with prizes awarded on-air.
(Three winners will
present their pies in New York for final judging; 3 will
present in Philadelphia.)
Two grand prizes will be awarded—one for south/central
Jersey, the other for
north/west Jersey. Each winner will receive an overnight
visit for 2 to Atlantic City or
Cape May, with dinner included.
To register, interested participants can e-mail farmsintheheights@gmail.com
