Riverview Park - Peach Pie Competition Results and Farmers' Market

This past Sunday, on a beautiful and sunny day, the Riverview Park Farmers' Market hosted one of the state-wide Peach Pie contests. There were 13 entries in all, and Joleen Crosta of Belleville, NJ took first place with her "Vegan Peachy Peach Pie", filled with Jersey peaches and topped with an almond crumble. Sandy Martiny won second-place with her amaretto crumble topped peach pie and Lara Hartman placed third with a ginger peach pie.

While I couldn't stay through the judging, I saw most of the entries come in and they all looked delicious. There was an air of festivity surrounding the whole park as lots of kids and families came in, enjoying the peach theme. This was the first time I'd visited the Riverview Farmer's Market, and I was impressed by the offerings. Mod Cup was around so I decided to get a mid-morning boost by enjoying a delicious cold brew iced coffee. It wasn't bitter, but very flavorful, and had a really nice strong coffee taste. The gentleman running the stand was very friendly and informative, telling me about the blend and flavors, as well as all their brewing methods. He also brewed fresh hot coffee by the cup per patron which was a really nice touch. There were a couple of produce stands with beautiful looking fruits and vegetables, and Amanda Bananas and Jersey City Veggie Burgers were also there, as well as Sutton Family Farm selling fresh raw milk cheese and yogurt, along with some honeys and jams.

I discovered an interesting Neopolitan pizza truck, Pizza Vita, which is an offshoot of a restaurant in Summit. Their menu was varied and sophisticated, including a breakfast pizza with ham, eggs, mozzarella and tomato and a special pizza with roasted peaches and a balsamic glaze. They only do whole pies, not slices, but I can't wait to go back and try at least one.

It was a really fun day, a great event, and I hope Jersey City will be participating in something similar next year. Congratulations to all those who entered!
