Get to Know JC Eater: Meredith

Welcome to "Get to Know JC Eater" where every week I will post a profile of a local resident who wants to share where and what they love to eat in Jersey City.

This site is meant to be useful to the community so what better way to do that then involve the community itself? If you'd like to be featured, please leave a comment below or email me directly.

Get to Know JC Eater: Meredith Napolitano Stettner
This week's JC Eater is a dedicated home cook who depends upon local resources to help her in the kitchen.

What's your name?
Meredith Napolitano Stettner

Where in Jersey City do you live?
Downtown, on Jersey and 1st

Do you have a favorite non-food spot/area in Jersey City?

I'm a nature lover and seek out all things green and water-related. Liberty State Park and Morris Canal Park are our favorite walks.

Do you follow a specific dietary lifestyle?

I'm a proud omnivore : ) If seasonal eating was a lifestyle, I'd say that. It certainly informs my cooking and recipes I post on my blog, Salvegging. (salvegging.blogspot.com)

What are your favorite places to eat in your neighborhood?

Our kitchen! What I love most is walking around the neighborhood and picking up ingredients to cook with that day or week. I rarely miss a downtown farmer's market--I get all my produce at Stony Hill, fish from JC Fish, poultry at Key Foods, pantry at P&K, bread at Choc O Pain, and recently, some cheese from Van Hooke. When we first moved here, only a few of those were options! In all seriousness though, it is necessary to go out a few times a month, so I will get to that below : )

What are your favorite places to eat in Jersey City?

My husband and I have lived here for almost four years and have seen things come and go. We don't have a car so we are pretty hyper-local in terms of restaurants in JC and there is such variety now. What it has come down to even more for us at this point is community support. We love the people at Saigon Cafe and Roman Nose and Razza and they are always delicious and consistent and know our faces. Dames Coffee is our go-to. I love the folks there, and their little yard.

Is there a particular dish in Jersey City that's your favorite or that you find yourself recommending over and over?

I love telling people to head to Razza for pizza and seasonal touches. I haven't gotten to take my family there yet! I sing the coffee at Dames--there are so many shops but they get the espresso/milk ratios right in my opinion.  Archer and Dullboy for cocktails : )

What kind of restaurant would you love to see in Jersey City that isn't here already?

Majorly miss Thirty Acres (pre tasting-menu) and The Kitchen at Grove Station. Both chefs were doing interesting things, playing around and inviting people to participate in that, and were our reason to head out for a nice, inspired time out of the house. I would love to see a similar place again. In the mean time, I may have stolen some plating and ideas from both of them. Oh, and a butcher. I think there's a consensus for that!

  1. Thanks for the info about Stony Hill farms. I will try to pick up some of the fresh produce at a JC farmers market.
