Welcome to weekly series,"Friday Feature" showcasing a specific dish or find from around Jersey City.
In keeping with the spirit of Cinco De Mayo, today's feature is a couple of favorites from a Jersey City standby: the margarita and guacamole from Taqueria.
Taqueria Downtown, 236 Grove Street, has been a Jersey City favorite for more than ten years with a diverse crowd that keeps the place anywhere from moderately busy when it first opens to lines out the door as the night goes on. Known for its hole in the wall vibe, Taqueria has a full menu of taco shop classics and then some.
Although they refused to serve guacamole for several years when they first opened, they happily changed their mind later on and it's now a standard on the menu - and it's a great version. I'm something of a purist when it comes to guacamole (although exceptions can and are made), and straight mashed avocado, onion, cilantro, salt, and lime juice will make me happy every time which is exactly what Taqueria serves up. Pair with one of their no-frills-but-still-packing-a-punch margaritas (they'll make it with or without salt - I highly recommend with), and you have yourself the start of a very good night. From there, the stage is set to order whatever you want and it becomes pretty easy to keep the drinks and tacos flowing.
Happy Cinco De Mayo, Jersey City!
