Friday Feature: Cheese Factura from Dulce De Leche

Welcome to weekly series,"Friday Feature" showcasing a specific dish or find from around Jersey City.

This week's feature is the Cheese Factura (or if you're like me and can never remember the name, the cheese croissant thing) from Dulce De Leche at 376 Central Ave in the Heights.

As many delicious things as there are at Dulce De Leche (and there really are so many), this cheese croissant continues to be one of my most-craved and I order one just about every time I visit. It's incredibly simple, but unbelievably delicious - and happily, keeps pretty well for a few days so I can pick up something else to enjoy right away and get one or two of these to have later. Made up of literally just flaky pastry dough wrapped around a thick slice of cheese (the staff say it's provolone), the smallish roll is not filling, but it is incredibly satisfying.

The main appeal of this comes down to two things: 1) the pure, straight-up gooey goodness of the cheese once warmed up a little which is how I highly recommend enjoying it and 2) the combination and contrast of the sweet, buttery, delicate, flaky dough with the salty, hearty, delicious cheese. Not to mention it's under a $1 and one of the most physically and emotionally satiating snacks in Jersey City - it's like having the comfort of a grilled cheese but in smaller form and with a sweet finish. At any given point, I am happier eating this than not eating this - and really, who can ask for more?
